THE ORIGIN STORY

"In 1944, Victor 'Trader Vic' Bergeron mixed the first Mai Tai for two friends from Tahiti. They said 'Mai Tai — Roa Ae!' — Tahitian for 'Out of this world. The best.' MXTology uses authentic Rhum Agricole — sugar cane juice rum from the French Caribbean — and real orgeat almond syrup. Not a shortcut in sight."

The Flavour Map

Three dimensions of the original tiki cocktail.

Origin
French Caribbean · Rhum Agricole

Made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice, not molasses. Grassy, funky, irreplaceable. The only rum category the Mai Tai was built for.

Character
Tropical · Nutty Orgeat · Citrus Brightness

The almond sweetness catches the citrus and takes it somewhere else entirely. Escapist by design. Convincingly tropical in thirty seconds.

Ritual
Crushed Ice · Mint · Lime · Umbrella

Crushed ice. Mint sprig. Spent lime shell. Paper umbrella optional but encouraged. This is a drink that knows what it is and isn't ashamed.

Inside The Pouch

Four ingredients. Zero shortcuts.

The original 1944 recipe required exceptional ingredients. We didn't substitute any of them.

🍹
Rhum Agricole
French Caribbean sugar cane

Made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. Grassy, funky, irreplaceable. The rum the Mai Tai was made for.

🌰
Real Orgeat
Handmade almond syrup

Slow-made from real almonds. Sweet, nutty, complex. The secret ingredient that separates a real Mai Tai from every imitation.

🍋
CitrusFresh™ Citrus
Lime and orange

Two citrus notes preserved at peak brightness using patented CitrusFresh™ technology. No heat treatment. No degraded flavour.

🍊
Orange Curaçao
Genuine triple sec

The original 1944 recipe used Curaçao. So do we. Because shortcuts show up in the glass.

The Activatable Cocktails™ Ritual

Open. Close. Shake. Escape.

Four steps. The original 1944 recipe. No tiki bar required.

1
Fill

Fill a lowball or tiki glass to the rim with crushed ice. The colder the better. Crushed ice is non-negotiable.

2
Activate

Open the pouch — it expands, pulling in fresh air. Re-seal. The Rhum Agricole and orgeat get ready to integrate.

3
Shake

Shake hard for 5 seconds. The orgeat emulsifies. The citrus brightens. The rum finds its footing. This is your Trader Vic moment.

4
Garnish

Pour over crushed ice. Mint sprig. Spent lime shell. Paper umbrella. The ritual is part of the drink.

Why It Hit Different

Most Mai Tais are an insult to 1944.

Victor Bergeron's original 1944 recipe. Unchanged.

  • Rhum Agricole — the rum category the Mai Tai was built for
  • Real handmade orgeat — not almond flavouring
  • Two-citrus profile: lime and orange, as intended
  • 14.7% ABV — the highest ABV in the MXTology range
  • The recipe Trader Vic himself would recognise

The Fine Print, Made Friendly

Questions Mai Tai fans actually ask.

What's Rhum Agricole?

Rhum Agricole is rum distilled from fresh sugar cane juice rather than the molasses byproduct used in most rums. It's primarily made in the French Caribbean — Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion — and has a grassy, funky, complex character that molasses rum simply doesn't replicate. Trader Vic specifically used Jamaican and Martinique rum in the original 1944 recipe. Rhum Agricole is the ingredient that makes an authentic Mai Tai taste like nothing else.

What's orgeat and why does it matter?

Orgeat (pronounced or-zhah) is an almond syrup — traditionally made by extracting oil from blanched almonds, combining it with sugar and orange flower water. It provides the nutty sweetness that is completely central to a proper Mai Tai. Most shortcut versions use almond flavouring. Real orgeat has a complexity and richness that changes what the cocktail is. MXTology uses real orgeat. It matters enormously.

How strong is the Mai Tai?

14.7% ABV — the strongest cocktail in the MXTology range. Approximately 1.5 standard drinks per 130ml pouch. This is a serious tropical cocktail, not a sweetened spritz. Drink it with crushed ice. Drink it slowly. Enjoy it properly.

Why crushed ice specifically?

Crushed ice isn't just aesthetic. It dilutes the cocktail at the right rate for the Mai Tai's flavour profile — the Rhum Agricole needs a little progressive dilution as you drink to open up its aromatic character. Cubed ice dilutes too slowly. Crushed ice is the right call. Trader Vic knew this. We agree.

What's an Activatable Cocktail™?

Open the pouch and it expands, drawing in fresh air. Re-seal. Shake for 5 seconds. The activation process integrates the orgeat, brightens the citrus, and gives you the result of a professional bartender's shaker — without the bartender. Our patented pouch technology keeps the ingredients fresher and brighter than most bars can achieve. Once you try it, you'll understand why we patented it.
